Poster made in 1988, Collection of the National Library, Canberra ACT Australia

Statement about this work.
200 Years Since the First Carving

I made this poster. I started the work in 1987 and printed it in time for selling before “Invasion Day” 26.01.88.

I design the poster and financed the printing myself. I had not done any printing and Paul Cockram (www.artplan.com.au) helped me and printed the work when he worked at Redback Graphix.

Obviously, this was an anti bi-centennial poster, and pro land rights statement, but less obvious, a comment on the introduction of metal and new laws (boundaries) to Australia, the continent.

I was very much into the Aboriginal politics of the time. I had spent some years on the “Deaths in Custody Committee” and in 1986/87 worked with the BLF raising money for buses to bring Aboriginal people to Sydney for the Invasion Day march.

I printed 100 only (some I signed) and cut away other works like a card, small poster and place mats from the extra paper. The BLF bought 10 posters, Black Rose bookshop 20, and Josef Lebovic Gallery two and the rest were sold to friends. The small posters I put up and gave away. I sold the laminated place mats in sets of six.

I am happy that the National Library has purchased a poster and know that they will be interested in its historical documents.
